Web accessibility (often abbreviated as a11y) is the practice of ensuring that websites are usable by everyone, regardless of disability. A critical component of accessibility is color contrast. Sufficient contrast between text and its background is essential for people with low vision or color vision deficiencies. This tool helps you test your color choices against the internationally recognized Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).
Level AA
This is the mid-range and most common level of conformance. To meet AA, normal text requires a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1, and large text requires 3:1. Most websites should aim to meet at least this standard.
Level AAA
This is the highest level of conformance, making content accessible to a wider range of people. To meet AAA, normal text requires a contrast ratio of at least 7:1, and large text requires 4.5:1. This is often required for government websites or those specifically serving users with disabilities.
What is "large text"?
According to WCAG, large text is defined as text that is at least 18 point (typically 24px) or 14 point (typically 18.66px) and bold.
Does this work for text on image backgrounds?
This tool is designed for solid color backgrounds. For text on images or gradients, you must manually pick the most problematic background color behind the text to get a worst-case scenario reading.
